Evaluation of campaign activity is underway, using interviews with care providers, online surveys with a representative sample of 20­ 55 year olds across England, and analysis of digital metrics. A link to a short survey for care providers to complete will soon be ready, and we will be asking sector organisations to cascade this link through their communications channels.
Care worker recruitment campaign in Oxfordshire attracts nearly 300 applicants
A recruitment drive to encourage more people in Oxfordshire to consider a career as a care worker has attracted three and a half times the number of applicants in 18 months as in the previous two years.
The campaign ­ 'Make a difference every day' ­ features a number of real life care workers, already supporting people across the county, talking about the rewards of the job and why they would recommend the job to others. Figures show the Oxfordshire Association of Care Providers (OACP) website received 281 applications for a variety of care work roles between November 2017 and March 2019, compared with 77 applications in the two years between September 2015 and October 2017.
506 new job seekers registered on the site between November 2017 and the end March 2019, compared with 189 from September 2015 and October 2017. And around 162,000 people have visited the OACP jobs page since the 'Make a difference every day' campaign launched.
Oxfordshire currently has an estimated directly employed workforceof14,000peopleworkingin adult social care. (Ref: Skills for Care ­ A summary of the adult social care sector and workforce
in Oxfordshire 2017/18). But the county's ageing population is growing at twice the average, so there is an urgent need for more caring, friendly and reliable care workers to support older, frail people in their own homes, in nursing and residential homes or in community hospital settings.
According the latest workforce survey by Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) and Oxford Health Foundation Trust (OHFT), nine out of 10 care workers say they are proud of the work they do and more than 95 per cent of care workers say
they make a positive difference to other people; while more than 80 per cent of care workers surveyed would recommend their jobs to others.
Kate Terroni, former Director for Adult Services at Oxfordshire County Council and new Chief Inspector of the Care Quality Commision (CQC) said: “Care work is a fantastic career that allows you to make a real difference to people’s lives every day. It’s flexible enough to fit around family or other commitments and there are opportunities all over the county, in both the NHS and homecare companies. I’m really pleased that there has been a significant increase in applications and would encourage anyone else who is interested to apply on the OACP website.”
Care workers help people with personal care like washing and dressing. They also prepare food, feed people and give out medication. Some care work involves carrying out more general tasks like housework, laundry and shopping. Care workers may also help people manage their money, pay bills and write letters, or support families to get used to new caring responsibilities.
The 'Make a difference every day' campaign was jointly run by OCC, OHFT, Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group (OCCG) and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH) in partnership with OACP.
Ladislava Smela, aged 35, a senior carer at the private Cleeve Lodge Residential Care Home in
Goring­on­Thames, South Oxfordshire, has been in her current role for over a year. Ladi previously worked at the care home from 2006 to 2014. Ladi said: “To be a care worker you need to have compassion, patience, a sense of humour and the willingness to learn new things about people and yourself. The most important quality is the ability to listen to residents and also colleagues as team work is vital for providing a good service."
Lilian Thomas, aged 89, has lived at Cleeve Lodge since January 2017, and has grown close to Ladi. She said:
"Ladi has been so kind. One of best qualities is that she listens to people at the care home. Ladi’s taken me out to various places which I really enjoy, especially the visit to a local school where I talked to the children; it was such a lovely day and brought back a few memories of my time working as a cook in a local school."
Ladi said: “I enjoy caring for Lily. She is always very kind, and appreciates the things you do for her. She is one of the nicest ladies you’ll meet and is very caring; she worries more about other people than herself ­ Lily makes my job that much easier.”
